Culture Rot in UK Organizations
More than 50% of UK professionals are experiencing “culture rot” – the gradual erosion of organizational values leading to toxic work environments. According to a Robert Walters survey of 1,500 professionals and 250 employers, 81% of employers admit that cost cutting has significantly weakened work culture. The problem has been compounded by hybrid working reducing spontaneous interactions and trust between staff, rapid AI deployment creating job insecurity, and in asset management specifically, an inherent tension between financial incentives and ethical culture. Ben Burling, notes that many asset managers struggle with “star manager syndrome,” where focus on high-performing individuals rather than company-wide culture leads to preferential treatment that damages morale, particularly during budget constraints.
Impact and Solutions

This means redefining core values, putting employee wellbeing at the center of business decisions, and holding themselves to the same high standards they expect from staff. Clear and consistent sanctions for those who fall short are essential to demonstrate that cultural standards apply to everyone, from executives to entry-level employees.
